The Making of the Chess Set - Part II

With the chess pieces all cut out, it is time to make the chessboard itself, this was probably the easiest thing to do. I used 1" by 1/2" square oak for this. Sharon helped me with this one, separating the darkest from the lightest, and getting a good grain pattern for each of them. We then did a "test" align and, with all pieces swapped and put in their correct orientation, stained them Pecan and Special Walnut.

While I was at it, I stained the Chess pieces too, Different from the board! I used Red Oak and Golden Oak on these so they contrasted to chessboard a little.

After the staining comes the assembly and gluing of the chessboard. I used weldwood on the blocks and formed a solid board (I love that stuff) which looks pretty decent.

Next comes the name which was quite simple actually. I made the pattern on the computer, printed it out, glued it to a 1-1/2" x 1/4" piece of red oak, then cut it out. Came out great!!!

Of course, after everything is stained and dried, I put a couple coats of Clear Acrylic Sealer to protect everything and also make it look good!

Last but not least... the finishing!!!! The finishing and other random pics are on the next and final page.
